Universal screening is a proactive and systematic process for early identification of students who may be at risk to provide appropriate support or interventions to help students thrive. Universal screening means engaging every student in a grade or school. SAFER screens for mental health and suicide risk. The point is the students nobody suspected are asked the question - the ones who would never raise their hand, who are not on anyone’s list, and who are the least likely to ask for help precisely when they most need it.
Every student who screens at high risk is seen the same day.
