Module 5.4 – Rescreening

Unit 5 · Response Open

A student may tell us the screen got it wrong. They can rescreen.

Students rush the form, misread items, and answer with someone reading over their shoulder. Offering a rescreen is the respectful response to a young person's account of their own state, and it documents that SAFER gave them a chance to correct the record.

The guard, which is not optional

A rescreen never lowers the response below what the first screen triggered. The same-day conversation still happens.

A student who screens High and then says they answered wrong is frequently walking it back because they are frightened of what comes next. That is one of the most common things that happens in the room.

The rescreen is information for the conversation, not a route around it. Without that guard it becomes a retroactive opt-out, and the students most likely to reach for it are the ones the screen just caught.

✓ Take Action. Say it plainly to the student: "Sure, you can do it again. We're still going to talk today either way. I just want to make sure I understand what's actually going on."
